LABUAN: The Labuan Faculty of International Finance (FKAL) of Universiti Malaysia Sabah is pleased to announce its next conference titled “Labuan and International Finance” with the theme “Cooperations and Challenges.”.
YB Senator Tan Sri Anifah Aman, Chairman of Labuan Corporation and Invest Sabah Bhd, will preside the conference on October 31, 2023, at the Eureka Room, Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL).
Former Malaysian Foreign Minister YB Senator Tan Sri Anifah Aman contributes a wealth of experience and insight to the conference, notably on the global financial scene.
According to Assoc Prof Dr. Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal, Dean of Labuan Faculty of International Finance, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, this conference comes at a key juncture in our understanding of the volatile global financial system and to address Labuan financial status.
The keynote speaker for the conference will be Prof. Dr. Kabir Hassan, Professor of Finance in the Department of Economics and Finance at the University of New Orleans.
Prof. Hassan will lecture on the “Asian Monetary Fund,” which will provide valuable insights into this essential topic. The formation of AMF, a concept championed by YAB Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his July visit to China, will be of particular importance.
Other highlights of the conference will be the presentation from Mr. Owen Chen Chee Onn, the Group CEO of Neurogine Group.
Mr Owen will mainly share his thoughts on the possibility of transforming Labuan into a financial blockchain centre of excellence.
His presentation holds an important place in the conference agenda, given the dynamic evolution of financial blockchain trends and the ever-expanding horizons it offers to financial institutions, governments, and businesses alike.
The following speaker, Dr Emily Yapp Hon-Tshin from FKAL UMS, on the other hand, will unveil her research findings from the project titled “Malaysian Agriculture Industry Financial Technology Adoption”. This noteworthy project stands as a successful collaboration between the UMS and Neurogine Group.
Ts Daniel Doughty CMILT, APR, Chairman of the Labuan Chamber of Commerce, will deliver a talk on “Labuan’s Current State and Future Requirements.”
His perspectives will be invaluable to policymakers and businesses interested in Labuan’s potential as a hub for domestic and foreign firms, including startups and downstream industries.
The conference’s final speaker will be Datuk Chin Chee Kee, Chairman of the Association of Labuan Trust Companies, who will present “Prospects and Challenges for Trust Companies in Labuan” from the industry’s perspective, providing critical insights for local authorities and stakeholders.
Dr. Mahmudul Haque, Conference Chair, underlined the need for such exchanges and talks between companies and many stakeholders in satisfying the evolving demands of WP Labuan.
FKAL’s Deputy Dean for Research and Innovation, Dr. Anath Rau Krishnan, noted that conferences like this are vital for the public to share their ideas and concerns about the rapidly changing financial sector.
